Town History

History

Origin of the Name :
in Latin texts - Horzicz, Gorici
in German texts - Höritz

The first mention of the town is from 1274. Hořice was first part of the holdings of Jindřich of Kosová Hora, then of Záviš of Falkenštejn, and finally of Vítek of Krumlov. In 1290 it was sold to the Vyšší Brod Monastery. In the year 1375 Hořice was the most significant town in the area with reeves, aldermen, and its own judicial authority. The Vyšší Brod abbot Pavel granted the township higher authority in 1549.

Tales and legends :
Hořice inhabitants were afraid of one townsman who was able to put his strange wordly-gained knowledge to use for his own benefit. Once, with the help of wings and magic, he froze a thief who wanted to steal a pig from his sty for the whole night, and in the morning freed him with a single word. But an old granny, who stole a clover from the townsman, died an unlucky death - he overslept, and the morning sun burned the frozen woman into ashes. From that day, the unhappy man carried out his pentinence by taking twenty-five pilgrimages to Mariazell. On the last journey, he was struck by a great tiredness, and overcome with desparation, he hung himself on a tree by the forest path.
